megson, when i was a lad, folk music, music for children,
We received a copy of Megson, When I Was a Lad CD to review.

I really want Miss A to experience as much as possible in her life. This includes different music. This CD is a selection of folk songs for children. I love this CD and so does Miss A. I am sure that I will be playing it for many months/years yet for both of us! I am looking forward to playing it to the baby when it arrives.

Megson are a  husband and wife duo, Stu Hanna and Debbie Hanna. They have  been nomiated three timesree times in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and are double winners of the 2011 Spiral Earth Awards they draw heavily on
their Teesside heritage to create a unique brand of folk music.

In 2011 MEGSON took a break from music as they welcomed their little girl Lola Wren but they were unable to stay away too long and looked for a project that would combine their new roles as parents and as musicians. When I Was a Lad was the result!

I was not aware of Megson before receiving this CD so I am pleased to be introduced to them!

To buy please visit the Megson Music website

Track Listing:

1. Bee-O (Traditional)
A Yorkshire lullaby, where “go to bee’o's” means “go to sleep”…

2. All The Shops Have Fallen Down (Hanna/Hanna)
This started life as an educational song – it was meant to list all the different shops on the high street and what could be bought there. But songs should reflect the times they are written in…

3. Jenny Jenkins (Traditional)
One of our favourite song books is 104 FOLK SONGS (as recorded on folkways records) compiled by Moses Asch, 1964.
The copy we have was rescued from a house clearance by Debs’s dad and has become well worn over the years. It has given us some great songs including this, Jenny Jenkins, a courtship songs from America.

4. Oats & Beans & Barley-o (Traditional)
A play song collected by a Miss Burne of Shropshire and published in a lovely illustrated book from 1894 entitled “Children’s Singing Games”. The game involves the children standing in a ring whilst taking turns to act out the actions.

5. The Riddle Song (Traditional)
We found this popular song in Sharp & Karpeles 80 English Folk Songs. But The earliest version of this was published around 1430 under the title of ” I have a yong suster” in the Sloane Manuscript 2593, a valuable manuscript of 15th century carols and lyrics currently held in the British Library.

6. Me Fathers Farm (Traditional)
Collected from Mr Thorton of the valley of Lothersdale, Yorkshire by Alison McMorland and presented in her fantastic collection of songs, rhymes and games for children entitled “The Funny Family” (Ward Lock Educational).

7. Dance To Your Daddy (based on the original by W. Watson)
Popularised by TV adverts and Theme Tunes, the earliest published version of this (entitled Dance To Thy Daddy) was
attributed to to a W.Watson in W & T Fordye’s Newcastle Songster of 1840.

8. Baby And The Band (Hanna/Hanna)

We have never seen a baby play a banjo & wouldn’t advise trying
it due to the highly tense strings.

9. Leatherwing Bat (Traditional)
Also known as The Bird’s Courting Song or The Hawk & The Crow, this ballads tells the stories of various birds in their courting expeditions and how they have succeeded and failed.

10. A Frog He Would A Woo-ing Go (Traditional)
Based on the 1883 version published by Randolph Caldecott – we would love to know what a frog would look like wearing an Opera Hat….its just a shame about the tragic end.

11. Five Little Ducks (Traditional)
What can we say – we’re just glad they all made it home safely…

Poppy Cat Birthday Treasures and Other Adventures, Poppy Cat

Poppy Cat Birthday Treasures and Other Adventures

I received a check disk of Poppy cat to review. I quite like Poppy Cat Birthday Treasure and Other Adventures. Miss A seems to like Poppy Cat too! She watched the episodes with quite a bit of interest (while covering the sofa in stickers!)

The episodes include:

Birthday Treasure
Bad Robot
Magic Show
Sunken Ship
Bumble Fumble
Cheese Mountain
Marshmallow Mines
Missing Keys
Chilly Hills
Space Race
Buried Treasure

It is a very colourful and bright programme and has lots of music. Miss A liked the robot episode. Think she liked the dramatic music. Poppy Cat and her friends go on an exciting adventure in each episode. It is quite simply done and that, I feel, is generally the best thing for little ones! The voices are not annoying either!

Voiced by Gavin & Stacey star, Joanna Page, Poppy Cat is a great new British children’s animation based on the best-selling books by author Lara Jones, which have sold in excess of 2.5 million copies!

Poppy Cat is based on the award-winning book series created by Lara Jones that has sold more than 2.5million copies worldwide since first being published in 2003. The colourful and appealing characters spring to life from the page to the small screen in stories of friendship and fantasy play. The series features 26 x 11 minute episodes and is seen through the eyes of Poppy Cat’s young owner, a little girl called Lara. Each story is a celebration of adventure as Poppy Cat and her friends embark on fanciful journeys through fantastical lands.

Poppy Cat

Commenting on providing the lead voice in the new ITV and CITV series, Joanna Page says, “Everybody loves Poppy Cat – the books have been such a success. So to actually play Poppy Cat is such an honour and I’m over the moon. I love Poppy Cat because she’s strong, she’s determined, she’s not scared of anything, she’s very brave, she’s lovely and kind, she’s not selfish, she looks after her friends and she doesn’t back down from anything — and I think I’ve got some of those qualities! It’s just really exciting to play a cat who is so strong and really up for it.”

She continues, “I always think its really strange hearing your voice spoken by an animated character because I don’t think I sound like I do – especially when I’m doing Poppy Cat’s voice which is slightly higher and a bit cuter. In my head I think I’ve got a very deep mature-sounding English voice. And then I hear my voice as Poppy Cat and think, ‘Oh my gosh, I actually do sound like I’ve got quite a lilt in my voice and my voice is quite high’.”

Poppy Cat celebrates imagination, creative play and sharing stories. Pre-schoolers are encouraged to use their imagination as a way to solve problems and pursue their goals. The stories of Poppy Cat also focus on friendship, and on social and emotional themes, which are relevant and familiar to pre-schoolers. But above all, Poppy Cat is about Making Adventures Extraordinary!

Poppy Cat currently airs every weekday on Nick Jr. For more information on the pre-school series, please visit www.poppycat.com, or become a fan of Poppy Cat’s on Facebook (www.facebook.com/officialpoppycat) or Twitter (www.twitter.com/PoppyCat_).

I received a press pack that contained a disc with two episodes and a few pieces of merchandise.

Miss A loved watching the episodes we have and I love it too. The programme is nice and brightly coloured, the characters are very cute! Miss A loves dogs, owls and rabbits anyway – and probably the others too so this is the programme for her!

Poppy Cat is beautiful. I was away last week so missed the first episode (and why I am late in posting this). I shall be watching next weeks episode..sorry Miss A will. I love the music too!

Poppy Cat, Lara Jones, Joanna Page

Interview with Joanna Page

What is the Poppy Cat series about?

The Poppy Cat series is about Poppy Cat’s adventures with all of her friends. They all play together but then every episode something happens — there’s a bit of drama. Then Poppy Cat unfurls her bandana and magics up a ship or a rocket or a submarine and they all go off on an adventure together and solve the problem.

What was it that attracted you to being the voice of poppy cat?

I was attracted to being the voice of Poppy Cat because Poppy Cat is just brilliant! I’ve always wanted to play some sort of animated character and I adore animals, so to play a cat is just fantastic. But I also love Poppy Cat because she’s strong, she’s determined, she’s not scared of anything, she’s very brave, she’s lovely and kind, she’s not selfish, she looks after her friends and she doesn’t back down from anything — and I think I’ve got some of those qualities! It’s just really exciting to play a cat who is so strong and really up for it.

And also everybody loves Poppy Cat; the books have been such a success. So to actually play Poppy Cat is such an honour – I’m over the moon.

What preparation did you need to do for the role?

My preparation for Poppy Cat was actually to study my Jack Russell dog! I’ve studied her for about ten years of her life and I think I’ve incorporated all of her animal ‘things’ into my voice. Listening to all of the other characters it’s really funny because everybody is so suited to their character. And it’s so well written, that you just say the lines. And they’ve cast it so well that naturally you’re very similar to your character. So I find that when I’m reading Poppy Cat I would probably react the same way as she does about lots of different things. I think my research is to make sure my voice is okay and to make sure that I don’t go too fast and that I get the right feel for it because it’s aimed towards children. Just to try and get the story, try and put across what you want to put across, and make your voice understood. Try and get the essence of Poppy Cat; try not to be too giggly or too scared — just know the way that Poppy Cat would play the story.

How different is being a voice artist to appearing on stage or on television?

Being a voice artist is completely different to performing on stage or on TV. You’re very lucky – if you’ve got to be in very early in the morning, you could turn up in your pyjamas if you want to! You don’t have to wear any make-up or look particularly good because it’s all in your voice. But because it’s just your voice that people hear you have to know what you’re playing. You have to know the story, completely commit to it and know what’s going on. Because if a voice artist is feeling a bit nervous, or they’re not confident, or they don’t know what they’re doing the audience will hear it straight away and you won’t believe it. Whereas on TV and in the theatre there’s so much going on and the audience is watching and listening to stuff so you can get away with a lot more. But if you’re on radio or you’re voicing a character you really have to be spot on. How long does it take to record an episode of Poppy cat?

With the rest of the cast recording an episode of Poppy Cat can take all day because we’ll be giggling and messing around a lot! But the other day I was on my own – I went in at 1.30 and I worked until five and I recorded 12 scripts, because I don’t like to stop; when I’m in the flow of it I like to just keep going and doing all of the episodes. So it takes a good few hours and I’ll probably go through and record about 12 episodes.

Who are your favourite characters from the series?

I love Egbert because he’s so sweet! I love his voice. And I feel so sorry for him because you want to include him. All the other characters are really sweet because they do try and include Egbert and
he’s the one who doesn’t really want to be included. And I also absolutely adore Owl. I love it that he’s so wise but also slightly sarcastic. I do think that adults watching will like Owl as well. He does make me laugh! I can’t listen to Chris [Neill – voice of Own] because when he’s speaking to me all I see is a big owl and that makes me laugh so much! And I love Zuzu’s voice! But I’ve got to be honest: Egbert and Owl are my favourite characters.

What are you favourite moments from the series?

My favourite moments from the series are always when we’re in a submarine and we’re underwater. I think it looks absolutely hilarious when we’ve got our scuba diving helmets on – and when we’re swimming. You can see Zuzu’s feet and Poppy cat’s feet just sort of floating and it looks so comical! I adore all of the scenes when we’re all under the water.

How does it feel to hear your voice spoken by an animated character?

I always think it’s really strange hearing your voice spoken by an animated character because I don’t think I sound like I do – especially when I’m doing Poppy Cat’s voice which is slightly higher and a bit cuter. In my head I think I’ve got a very deep mature-sounding English voice. And then I hear my voice as Poppy Cat and think, “Oh my gosh, I actually do sound like I’ve got quite a lilt in my voice and my voice is quite high.”

If you could be an animal which would you be and why?

If I could be an animal I would like to be a dog because they get a brilliant life. I would basically like to be my dog because she gets fed amazing things, she gets smoothed all the time, she gets to sleep in bed and she’s carried around everywhere. My life revolves around making her life really good fun — so she gets amazing clothes, amazing food, she gets pampered, she gets to sleep and I massage her all the time as well. So I would like to have the life of my Jack Russell dog called Daisy.

I was sent a copy of Little Charley Bear Charley on Safari DVD to review, well for Miss A to review.

This DVD has six episodes and the DVD comes with a Charley Bear toy. Miss A seems to love these little toys and she took it to bed with her the first night!

A brief description of the DVD:

Charley is pretending to be different wild animals but he has no idea what noises they make. To find out, he heads off on an exciting jungle safari with his friends Midge and Nibblit to track down the animals and hear their sounds. Behaving like a crazy monkey, Charley gets chased by a snappy shark, tries not to wake a very grumpy tiger and explores the jungle for Dinosaurs, discovering a Charleysaurus!

It will be released the 7th May and you can buy it in various places including Amazon

For more information on Little Charley Bear, please visit www.littlecharleybear.com or become friends with Charley on Facebook at www.facebook.com/littlecharleybear

Miss A enjoyed the DVD very much! She seems to love Charley bear and I think she hasn’t seen these episodes before. I think she likes jungle animals so this was the DVD for her! I liked the fact that the DVD had its own plastic case and not in a cardboard sleeve like some children’s DVD’s. The toy is made well. I can’t seem to find a CE mark on it though, unless it is on the box, I am not at home at the moment to check.

So for an RRP of £12.99, I think it is a good buy. The episodes are fun and they are great for children that love the jungle!

I have some pictures of Miss A with the little Charley Bear on my computer at home. I will upload them when I get back.

raa raa the noisy lion, Welcome to the Jingly Jangly Jungle, DVD

We received a copy of Raa Raa the Noisy Lion Welcome to the Jingly Jangly Jungle DVD to review. This DVD came with a toy figure of Raa Raa.

The episodes are:

  • Topsy’s Musical Stones
  • Ooo Ooo Slips Up
  • The Right Sound
  • Zebby’s Snack Time
  • Raa Raa’s Big Roar
  • Raa Raa’s Favourite Things
  • Two’s Company
  • No Sleep Til Bedtime

Now my daughter seems to be a huge fan of Raa Raa. She loves a particular episode (this isn’t on the DVD) where they sing the Raa Raa Beat. Even without her favourite episode, my daughter wanted to watch this DVD over and over again. She loved it. She especially loves the fact it came with a Raa Raa toy. She often carries it about with her!

The DVD and toy comes in cardboard packaging. There is no plastic DVD case. I quite like this but it does mean that I have to keep it away from Miss A as she will wreck it in an instant! I think Raa Raa is fantastic. I have the theme song in my head quite a lot! Miss A is always glued to the television when I put this DVD on so I think I can safely say that we both recommend this DVD to anyone!

The toy is reasonably good quality. Perfect for little hands!

You can visit the Raa Raa website or you can find Raa Raa on Facebook

You can buy this Raa Raa DVD on Amazon

Tara’s Music Magic Snuggles in Scotland is a music DVD aimed at 0-5 year olds.

Miss A loves this DVD. She doesn’t dance to it but it is like she is in a trance when it is on. I am please dot see classics like Ring a Ring o Roses, 5 Little Ducks and 10 Little Pandas (10 Green Bottles) although those poor little pandas! One thing, and it is my own opinion, I am glad I can skip the one about Daddy and Me Fishing!

The DVD case, well Miss A loves it! I think it’s because it is quite colourful.

‘Join us on the magical journey of Alfie and Elise to ‘ The Land Of Sometimes’.

As the story unfolds, you will be introduced to a collection of deliciously eccentric characters and their original songs.

Catchy, melodic, sometimes hilarious, each song is different from the last. Irish folk to New Orleans jazz, reggae to disco, poetry to simple beauty, these songs have a universal appeal and are an introduction to the eternal power of music and storytelling.

This album is truly magical! I think it is fantastic. It seemed to capture Miss A’s attention throughout. The CD case and booklet is so well made and pretty, even that is worth the money! It is a work of art! I think this CD would appeal to young and old, I certainly enjoyed listening to it. I love every part of the album and so does Miss A, it seems! She loves looking at the book. I have had to hide the album cover and the book away though as she is terrible for ripping things up and she is not doing that to this, no way!

I really think it is going to a favourite thing to listen to in this household.

The Land of Sometimes website is superb as well, go and check it out for yourself. There are things for your little ones to colour and wallpapers that you can download, how I wish my daughter was into colouring in. She scribbles but isn’t showing interest in colouring things in yet!

This magical album, can be purchased from Amazon

I was sent a copy of the CD for review purposes, as always I give my own honest opinions.

Hands Up is a fantastic single from Justin Fletcher’s Album that is due for release in Easter 2012.

Justin is well loved in our household. All of us think he is fantastic! My daughter especially loves Something Special and is a huge fan of Justin’s House! My fiancé especially likes Gigglebiz. Me, I love all of Justin’s programmes!
I love this single, I am singing along already! Miss A loves it too. I think she knew it was Justin straight away. I will try and get a video of her dancing to it, she doesn’t dance all the time and I keep missing it!
I hope Justin has a huge success with this single and with the album when it is released. Me and my girl love it!
The single is out now, go and buy it…
Justin is on Facebook and Twitter. Why not join him
